A New Type of Bitcoin

In an ironic twist, there was once concern that Bitcoin would be used to buy illegal drugs but now legal currency is being used to buy a drug called Bitcoin. This hot new brand of ecstasy pills is named after the peer-to-peer payment system introduced in 2009.

Bitcoin in Europe

This variant of MDMA is becoming popular in Europe, particularly the Netherlands and Great Britain, with as many as four different kinds of ecstasy adopting the moniker. The drug review site pillreports.com reported that the tablets have been circulating in Europe since 2013, while Reddit added that the pills are a mix of MDMA and caffeine.

Bitcoin enthusiasts are not thrilled as they feel it is hurts their credibility as they fight for legitimacy. Others see a conspiracy afoot, suggesting someone with an anti-Bitcoin agenda is behind the drugs.

Wherever the drugs come from, they’re definitely cause for concern. England’s Daily Record newspaper reported that a 21-year-old man was fighting for his life after taking three yellow Bitcoin pills. He wound up in his local hospital’s ICU after he was found in an agitated state.

The incident had police warning the public about Bitcoin ecstasy pills and overdose. At the time of the report, they were still trying to establish from where the pills originated. This latest event is on the heels of a recent tragedy in which a 17-year-old high school student died after apparently swallowing Mortal Kombat tablets at a Glasgow nightclub. She collapsed at the venue and died a short time later. A week later, a 39-year-old father was taken to the ICU after he became ill while in line to enter that same club. It’s suspected that he took some ecstasy while waiting to get inside.
