If you are in recovery and start to feel like you are beyond relapse, this story is for you. It’s a cautionary tale that shows that everyone is vulnerable – even treatment professionals. It is important to start each day with a renewed commitment to sobriety and the choices that make it possible over the long term.
A Southern California news outlet reported recently that a pedestrian in the town of Torrance was killed after being struck by an allegedly drunk driver. The 31-year-old victim left a bar before midnight and was crossing the street when he was hit and propelled through the car’s windshield. The suspect drove for blocks with the dying man on the hood of her car, only stopping after witnesses waved down the vehicle.
The victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, while the driver, a 51-year-old drug and alcohol counselor, was arrested for driving under the influence and manslaughter. She was being held on $100,000 bail.
According to Torrance Police officials the suspect’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. In another twist the suspect was a counselor for one of the alleged victim’s family members. It was not the suspect’s first DUI arrest. Records show she was also charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance in 2010 and leaving the scene of an accident. According to court records the charges were dismissed or not prosecuted.
This case is still pending, so we don’t know the outcome, but it is a tragedy for all involved. Addiction is an insidious disease, and it will tell you that you can return to past behaviors without losing control. However letting your guard down once can be one time too many.
