Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents Recovery

Foundations Events partnered with Shane Ramer, owner and producer of That Sober Guy Radio, for the Innovations in Behavioral Healthcare 2016 conference. The podcast discusses alcoholism and addiction recovery, providing a platform for guests to speak their minds and share their stories in an honest, intimate format.

Today’s podcast with Shane Ramer of That Sober Guy Podcast features James McManus. James is the founder and CEO of Family First Adolescent Services. He and a close friend conceptualized this program after seeing a shortage of adolescent recovery resources. James began his career with his own recovery. He went back to school and worked as a licensed private practitioner before finding his niche helping kids and families.

James McManus and Shane Ramer talk about attitudes towards adolescent addiction issues. James finds educating parents to be the greatest challenge. Misinformation causes many parents to deny problems or hesitate getting help. A child does not have to meet the full criteria for a substance use disorder before needing treatment. Drugs are more powerful and easier to access than ever, and use escalates quickly. Depression and anxiety further complicate substance use and recovery for many adolescents. These issues also tend to run in families and be multi-generational. James and Shane discuss the importance and bravery of the first phone call for help. James offers advice for finding the right fit for treatment.
